Hiring a roofer

How to choose a roofer in Nottinghamshire: 7 checks before you book

Roofing is, sadly, one of the easiest trades to get stung on — you can't see the work from the ground, and by the time a corner-cut shows up, the cowboy's long gone. After 19 years on roofs around here, these are the checks we'd tell our own family to make before booking anyone.

The 7 checks

  • Accreditations: look for genuine ones like NFRC membership and Buy with Confidence (Trading Standards) — and check they're real, not just a logo on a van
  • Insurance: ask for proof of public liability cover (we carry £2m) before work starts
  • A written, itemised quote: not a number scribbled on the back of a card
  • A real guarantee in writing: ask exactly what's covered and for how long
  • Reviews across more than one platform: Google, MyBuilder, Bark — not just hand-picked testimonials
  • A proper address and history: how long have they traded, and where are they based?
  • Sensible payment terms: a deposit to secure the date and materials is normal; being asked for the full amount up front is not

Be wary of

  • Door-knockers who say your roof is dangerous and they can start today
  • Cash-only, no paperwork, no guarantee
  • Quotes far below everyone else's — something's being left out
  • Pressure to decide on the spot

What good looks like

A roofer worth booking will happily show you photos of what they've found, explain your options including the cheaper one, put everything in writing, and give you time to think. No theatrics, no hard sell.

That's how we work — family-run, NFRC members, Buy with Confidence approved, with a 10-year written workmanship guarantee and a quote in writing within 48 hours.
